Project Summary

To create a welcoming and memorable sense of arrival to the province, our team designed gateway signs for all points of entry by land, sea, and air. The design features two distinct forms - one three times larger than the other - symbolizing the geographic proportions of Newfoundland and Labrador. Sharp, angular lines evoke the rugged character of the province’s coastline, while rows of etched text create a striking sense of relief reminiscent of a jagged rock face. On closer inspection, these rows reveal the names of every community in the province, celebrating Newfoundland and Labrador’s famously quirky place names and deep sense of pride. A playful wave in the foreground serves as a selfie platform and represents the province’s enduring connection to the sea. Together, these elements create a thoughtful and distinctive tribute to the province’s character and sense of place.
